The Already Adept Sprinter Just Got Better: New Engine & AWD
Major Upgrades for the 2023 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter
The all-new Sprinter, sprinting into your local Mercedes-Benz of Orland Park in early 2023, has undergone major performance upgrades for the upcoming model year. Carried over from Mercedes passenger cars, these upgrades include changes in the Sprinter’s engine lineup, a new drivetrain, and an enhanced transmission. Don’t worry — it’ll be the same Sprinter you’ve come to know and love. Here’s a closer look at the improved performance specs of the 2023 Sprinter, brought to you by Mercedes-Benz of Orland Park.
Fully Four-Cylinder Engine Lineup
In 2023, the Sprinter will be bidding farewell to its three-liter V6 turbo diesel engine. Instead, it’ll be replaced by a new four-cylinder engine called by Mercedes as the OM654, making the Sprinter’s engine lineup exclusively four-cylinder. The new OM654 engine will be available in 168-hp and 208-hp power output ratings, increasing the capability of your 2023 Sprinter compared to previous models. You’ll also appreciate the OMG 654’s smoother acceleration, higher torque values, fewer emissions, and lower noise and vibration levels.
From 4×4 to All-Wheel Drive
Another significant change coming to the 2023 Sprinter is its new drivetrain. Replacing the previous 4×4 system is the new AWD capability, providing more power and maneuverability and allowing you to take on tricky terrain easily. Whereas the 4×4 configuration only provided 35% of torque to the Sprinter’s front axle and 65% to its rear, the new AWD automatically distributes torque on demand more evenly. The Sprinter’s new AWD system also ensures that you receive the same level of quality and capability you loved about it in the first place by maintaining the previous model’s ground clearance as well as its approach, departure, and breakover angles.
Nine-Speed Transmission Now Standard
The Sprinter’s seven-speed transmission will also be replaced by a nine-speed one in 2023 to complement the fully four-cylinder engine lineup better. Thanks to the new nine-speed transmission, you’ll enjoy greater driving comfort, decreased noise levels, and quicker downshifts. More importantly, it’ll also significantly reduce fuel consumption due to a higher overall gear ratio, helping you save up on fuel costs while still doing what you love with your Sprinter.
